Bounce rate explained without the jargon

A plain-language guide to bounce rate, pages per visit, and which engagement numbers are worth watching on a small website.

Bounce rate is the share of visits that view only one page. It sounds bad, but a high bounce rate is normal for blog posts or documentation where the visitor found their answer.

A better everyday number: pages per visit

Pages per visit tells you how far people explore. If it rises after you add internal links, your site is guiding readers better.

Read it per page, not overall

A sitewide average mixes your home page with your articles. Look at top pages and referrers together: a post with lots of search traffic and one page per visit may simply be answering a question well.

What to do next

  • Add a clear next step at the end of popular pages.
  • Link related articles to each other.
  • Compare before and after over at least two weeks.
