Cookie-free website analytics: how it works
How analytics can count unique visitors without cookies or storing IP addresses, and what you give up in exchange.
Traditional analytics tools set a cookie to recognise returning visitors. Cookie-free analytics counts visitors differently, which is why many sites can skip the consent banner for it. Always check your own legal requirements.
The daily hash approach
When a pageview arrives, the server combines the site ID, the visitor's IP address, the browser's user agent and today's date, then runs it through a one-way hash. The IP address itself is never stored. The result identifies a visitor for one day only.
What you gain
- No cookies written to the visitor's device.
- No cross-site tracking or personal profiles.
- A much smaller, faster script.
What you give up
You cannot follow one person across multiple days, so "returning visitor" figures are approximate. For most content sites and products this trade-off is worth it.
